Screenwriting Mode by node
CivNode's editor includes a screenwriting mode for writing scripts, screenplays, and stage plays.
## Activating screenwriting mode
Open a work, go to Work Settings, and change the format to Screenplay. The editor switches to screenwriting mode.
## Formatting
The screenplay plugin handles formatting automatically:
- **Scene headings (slug lines):** Type INT. or EXT. and the editor formats it as a scene heading — uppercase, with the standard location and time format. - **Action lines:** Regular text is formatted as action — description of what's happening on screen. - **Character names:** Type a character name in uppercase and the editor recognizes it as a dialogue cue, centered on the page. - **Dialogue:** Text after a character name is formatted as dialogue, indented properly. - **Parentheticals:** Text in parentheses between character name and dialogue is formatted as a parenthetical direction. - **Transitions:** CUT TO, FADE OUT, and similar transitions are recognized and right-aligned.
## What the plugin does automatically
- Formats new lines based on context. After dialogue, the next uppercase line is treated as a new character name. After action, uppercase followed by a period is a scene heading. - Maintains proper margins and spacing per industry standards. - Paginates for standard page counts (roughly one minute per page).
## AI tools in screenwriting mode
All AI tools work in screenwriting mode. The exploration pane understands screenplay structure — it will reference scenes by their slug lines, discuss character dialogue patterns, and suggest scene transitions.
## Export
Screenplays can be exported in standard format. The formatting translates to the conventional layout that industry readers expect.
## Tips
- Let the plugin handle formatting. Don't manually add spaces or tabs. - Use the character panel on the book dashboard for tracking characters. Especially useful in screenplays where characters come and go frequently. - Scene headings...
