AI Levels — What Each Mode Gives You by node
CivNode has three AI modes. You pick one in your preferences and it controls what AI features are available throughout the platform.
**Off**
No AI features anywhere. The editor is a plain writing tool. No suggestions, no generation, no analysis. AI CivPages are excluded from your encounters — you only see human-written content. All other features work normally, just without AI assistance.
This is a valid choice and nothing is diminished by it.
**Assist**
AI tools are available but don't act on their own. You have to ask for them:
- Inline editor tools: rewrite, expand, coach, explain — all in the toolbar, triggered by selecting text - AI chat for discussing your writing - AI fill for characters, locations, and other story elements - Portrait and cover art generation - Exploration pane in both Plot and Draft modes
Nothing happens automatically. AI does not offer unsolicited suggestions or pop up while you are writing. You click a button, it does a thing, you decide what to keep.
**Active**
Everything in Assist, plus:
- Writing analysis and insights run automatically when you finish a section - AI-generated suggestions may appear proactively (you can dismiss them) - The exploration pane may pre-load relevant observations
Active mode is for writers who want AI deeply integrated into their process. More involved, more interruptive. Most people prefer Assist.
**Where to change it:**
Settings → Preferences → AI Level. The change takes effect immediately.
**Which should you choose?**
If you are not sure, start with Assist. It gives you everything without the AI being pushy. You can always move up or down whenever you like.
