Bartleby, the Scrivener by node

A Wall Street lawyer hires a new copyist named Bartleby, who at first works with silent industry. Then Bartleby begins to refuse tasks with the phrase 'I would prefer not to.' He prefers not to copy, not to leave, not to eat, not to live. The lawyer cannot compel him and cannot abandon him.
