A professor of phonetics bets that he can transform a Cockney flower girl into a duchess by teaching her to speak properly. He succeeds — and in doing so creates a person who can no longer be what she was, yet refuses to be what he intended. Shaw's comedy about class, language, and the dangerous act of educating someone beyond their station.
