Collegiate Assessor Kovaloff wakes one morning to discover his nose has vanished from his face. The nose, meanwhile, is found baked inside a loaf of bread -- and then spotted riding around St. Petersburg in a carriage, dressed as a state councillor and outranking its former owner.
