Challenging (to put it politely)
I'm doing an MA in creative writing in Utrecht and my tutors describe my work as 'challenging' in the way that tutors describe work they don't know how to advise on. I take this as useful information about readership rather than as criticism. The experimental prose I write is interested in what happens to narrative when you remove its conventional infrastructure. Not stream of consciousness, which is a different project. More: what is the minimum structure required to sustain a reader's investment, and is that minimum structure the same as what fiction traditionally assumes. I have been reading Anne Carson and Jenny Offill and László Krasznahorkai and the Portuguese writer José Saramago, and the common thread is writers who trust the reader to do more work than the text explicitly asks for. I live in Utrecht near the Oudegracht canal and I write every day, which is a habit the MA has imposed and which I intend to keep. My tutors are more conventional than I am and the workshop sessions are useful in the specific way that resistance is useful. I know my work is working when the person reading it either finishes it or stops precisely at the moment where I thought they might stop. Both outcomes tell me something.
